A Journey of Grace
|
The Formation of a Leader and a Church
Herbert W. Chilstrom
|
Foreword by Martin Marty.
This autobiography of the Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Chilstrom, the first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)), is the story of his life as it intertwines with the church from baptism to the present day.
The book begins with a reflective account of his family roots, childhood, education, pastoral and teaching career. The subsequent narrative includes his life as a synod bishop, his role in the formation of the ELCA and his ministry as the first ELCA presiding bishop. His focus on leadership, while central to this narrative, is told in the context of the larger scene of the major historical events that were happening at the time.
Embedded in his story are deeply personal accounts of his family experience, including the role of his wife, Corinne, the trauma of the death of their son, Andrew, and the impact of his handicapped brother David.
From a review in the Augsburg College Spotlight, November 2011 e-newsletter
Herbert W. Chilstrom gives the reader a front-row seat to the birthing of a national church body, and a window into the life of a remarkable Augsburg College graduate who is a grace-filled man of faith and a church leader. His gratitude for the enlightening influence of several of his professors is obvious in the book, and he says it was at Augsburg that he learned that only by understanding history can we comprehend the world today. At Augsburg also, Chilstrom was awakened to issues such as racism, anti-Semitism, and peace and justice, and he has come to believe that there is no better seedbed for growing peace in the world, particularly among people of different faiths, than a liberal arts college.
After serving two four-year terms as the ELCA presiding bishop, Chilstrom retired in 1995. He currently lives in St. Peter, MN, and Green Valley, AZ, with his wife, the Rev. Corinne Chilstrom. He is an active volunteer at the Gustavus Arboretum, where his master gardener skills are especially useful
