Called to Ecumenism
|
A Sense of Vocation at Luther College
Ruth R. Kath
|
The author chronicles the longstanding call to ecumenism that has characterized Luther College. The way the Luther College community welcomes its neighbors to join the conversation about faith and learning is foundational to Dr. Kaths telling of the story. Important to the telling of the Luther story are the voices of ecumenists who have helped to shape the vision of inclusion for the campus and for the town of Decorah. The voices of the Luther archives, the faculty, and the students provide reflections on the special ecumenical calling of this small liberal arts college of the church.
Ruth Kath has taught German at Luther College since 1979. In 1998, Kath earned a degree in Theology. In 2002, she was appointed the Church Vocations Coordinator under the $2 million Sense of Vocation grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. In this capacity, she directs Sense of Vocation programs that help students learn the concept of vocation and understand the spiritual, ethical and professional values, especially for those students considering work in church ministry. Since 1998, Kath has co-taught a January Term course called Sacred Spaces: Italy and Germany which uses as its primary text the signed Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification between Roman Catholics and Lutherans. The course is a joint effort between Luther College and its Roman Catholic sister institution Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and takes students first to Rome, Italy, and then to Wittenberg, Germany, and to the Ecumenical Research Institute at Strasbourg, France. In 1993, Kath co-established the Annual Ecumenical Lecture Series at Luther College.
