Deepening Faith, Hope and Love
|
In Relations with Neighbors of Other Faiths
Simone Sinn, Editor
|
Theology in the Life of the Church, vol 2
This book lifts up the interrelatedness of faith, hope, and love in interreligious relations. These three include the relationship to God, the relationship to the future we envisage in faith, and the relationship to fellow human beings.
Faith points to the existential dimension in interreligious relationships. For people of faith, their understanding of God’s relationship to them shapes their vision and ways of life.
Hope is the eschatological dimension of religious belief. Hope is the theocentric perspective that gives us courage to be in dialogue with people of other faiths. It is God who enables and sustains human life and human relationships.
Love is the committed relational dimension between human beings. Love involves developing relationships that empower others and acting in ways that are supportive of them.
Faith, hope, and love open a space for being with the other. That which constitutes a “good” relationship is a living process that engages existential, eschatological, and relational dimensions that are mutually enhancing.
Simone Sinn is a theological associate in the LWF Department for Theology and Studies, Geneva, Switzerland.
