Design & Dignity

The Birth and Development of MSAADA Architects

Poul Bertelsen

For more than three decades, missionary/architect Poul Bertelsen and his staff at MSAADA Architects have designed and helped ensure the completion of more than 750 projects throughout the world. Hundreds more are in various stages of development. While the functions of MSAADA-designed buildings range from medical and educational to residential, spiritual and cultural, they all strive to improve the lives and preserve the dignity of poor people living in developing countries.

Bertelsen’s 30+-year, multi-million-mile journey began when he was called to leave the comfortable life he was enjoying as a young architect in Denmark to serve as a missionary in Nigeria. It continues through the years he developed and expanded the Architectural and Engineering Department for the Central Office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) to his decision to found MSAADA Architects and serve building projects funded by other European church-related organizations who had unmet needs that were similar to the ELCT’s.

Bertelsen’s rare blend of pragmatism, passion, candor, and humor enables him to share the insights and knowledge he has gained from experience in clear, compelling prose. His examples and anecdotes prompt readers to reflect upon, appreciate, and celebrate the role that God plays in their lives – from the most heartrending to the most heartwarming moments and all the days and years in between.

Poul Bertelsen completed his formal architectural studies at Aalborg Polytechnic College and was awarded professional registration by the Government of Denmark. In addition to founding MSAADA Architects and leading this firm since 1980, he has taught as a “Professor in Practice” at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design and been a featured speaker at architectural, church, and community conventions, symposia, and events in the United States, Denmark, India, Africa and other locations throughout the world. He has served as vice chair for Operation Bootstrap Africa and was a founding member of the board for Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry. He resides in Minnetonka, Minnesota with his wife of 40 years, Susanna.
