Jesus Is Risen Volume 1

The Lifework and Teaching of
The Rev. Dr. Walter R. Bouman, ThD

Ann M. Haut, editor

Walter R. Bouman was the Edward C. Fendt Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at Trinity Lutheran Seminary from 1971 to 2005. He was thoroughly devoted to the church, to its people, and especially to his students. This book brings Dr. Bouman’s essential message, “Jesus is risen, and that changes everything!” into conversation with new readers—and satisfies former students who have yearned for a book that contains his Gospel message and stories.

This volume surveys Bouman’s theology of God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Fred Meuser has famously said that Martin Luther preached as though he were on a battlefield. And that is how Walter Bouman taught: Every lecture was a battle for the hearts and souls and minds of his students. He came to the task clothed in the full armor of God described by the Apostle, and with more besides: a sparkling wit; a rich understanding of art, literature, music, and culture; a deep-seated commitment to justice and mercy; and a voluptuous, volcanic passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Almost every time I met Bouman, he seemed like a man who had just returned from the empty tomb—mesmerized, a bit frightened, but overwhelmed with joy. Jesus rising from the dead affected how Bouman ate, slept, talked, listened, worked, rested, banked, voted, and drove his car. Why wouldn’t it? Walter Bouman loved God with all his heart and soul, but he especially loved God with his mind. As a theologian, he belongs on a short list with people like C. S. Lewis and N. T. Wright—a brilliant, creative thinker who knew how to communicate the faith in ways that matter for the everyday lives of ordinary people. This collection of his teachings will be prized by all who were privileged to hear him lecture and may prove even more valuable to those who missed that opportunity. Students, pastors, and missional church members will want this book to read and cherish.
Mark Allan Powell, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Lutheran Seminary

The Rev. Dr. Walter Bouman’s indomitable spirit and profound understanding of theology are well captured in this important two-volume work. The books are more than just another theology among many; they are a must-read-and-digest for any serious student of theology—whatever their background. The work is not only a tribute to the man and his work, but more importantly to the God whom he studied, taught, served, loved, and worshiped his whole life.
The Rev. Vicki T. Garber, Head Pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills, Kentucky

Ann M. Haut, PhD, was a student of Walter R. Bouman at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Bouman also served on her doctoral committee and influenced her teaching career.
