Luther Reed

The Legacy of a Gentleman and a Churchman

Philip Pfatteicher

The career of LUTHER D. REED (1873-1972) was marked by roles as pastor, professor, and seminary president. In the midst of the “frontier tradition” he, with the assistance of many others, helped Lutherans in America recover their liturgical inheritance. He was a founder of the Lutheran Liturgical Association in 1898 and is best known for his monumental The Lutheran Liturgy: A Study of the Common Service of the Lutheran Church in America (1947).

PHILIP H. PFATTEICHER is Professor of English and Religious Studies Emeritus, East Stroudsburg University and sometime adjunct professor of Sacred Music, Duquesne University, and Honorary Assistant at the Church of the Advent, Boston. He is the widely respected author of many books, including the Commentary on the Lutheran Book of Worship, the New Book of Festivals and Commemorations: A Proposed Common Calendar of Saints, Liturgical Spirituality and Journey into the Heart of God: Living the Liturgical Year.

This is the sixth in a series of monographs published by the Center for Church Music, Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Illinois—Shaping American Lutheran Church Music—highlighting persons, movements, and events which have helped shape the course of church music among Lutherans in North America.
