Lutheran Pedagogy
for a Global Context

Peter Vethanayagamony and
F. Volker Greifenhagen, editors

A new set of cultures is being formed as a result of global interconnectedness. Not only do economic goods or cultural influences increasingly cross borders, but human beings also make that move. The United States and Canada have experienced increasing numbers of multi-faith and multi-cultural immigrants from non-European countrie, changing the religious landscape. A further consequence of globalization is the increased presence of students from all over the world in our classrooms in the United States and Canada, representing many different cultures, languages, races, and religions.

These dramatic changes call for serious study of our contemporary cultural situation and the development of a mindset open to adaptation to cultural change if productive learning and teaching are to take place. Our theological perspective provides a potent resource for how we can engage the myriad shifts and changes of globalization in terms of our scholarship and teaching. We are called to grapple with the changes realistically and hopefully in order to facilitate better teaching and learning.

These issues were the focus of the 2014 Consultation of Teaching Theologians, organized by the ELCA/ELCIC Association of Teaching Theologians. The consultation was held at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
