As Luther’s work reflects his response to the challenges and predicaments of his time, the author interprets Luther’s theology in response to the conflicts and predicaments faced in South Africa during the last three decades. He argues that a critical reading of Luther’s theology provides a unique contribution to ecumenical insights and debates focused on the contextual relevance of theology. Faith in God’s transformative acceptance of the unacceptable gives hope and courage to act in a free and responsible way in all spheres of life.
Klaus Nurnberger is professor emeritus, fellow, and honorary research associate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietrmarizburg, South Africa.
