Mission & Migration

Fifty-Two African and Asian Congregations in Minnesota

Dana K. Nelson

Contemporary Issues in Mission and World Christianity Series

During the last half century the centers of the Christian world have moved decisivley to Africa, to Latin America, and to Asia—the Global South. Through changing patterns of immigration into the United States, new networks are being built and new mission strategies adopted. A good number of the new immigrants are Christians and their congregations are of primary significance to them. This book focuses specifically on African and Asian Christians in the Twin Cities.

Many of these congregations started as small prayer groups, meeting in private homes. Some do not have a permanent church building. During the weekdays many of the pastors work in other jobs to secure a regular income.

The aim of this book is to provide glimpses of church life and insights into the backgrounds of the immigrant congregations whose history has not yet been written. This material is based on interviews, pamphlets, and participation in the worship services of these congregations.

Dana Nelson is a research assistant to Dr. Frieder Ludwig, Professor of Mission and World Christianity and Director of the Global Mission Institute (GMI) at Luther Seminary.

Dana has been working and volunteering all over the world with various development organizations such as the US Peace Corps, Voluntary Service Overseas –Canada (VSO) and Project Minnesota-Leon. She has lived in Nicaragua, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, South Africa, the Philippines, China and most recently Ethiopia. She has accepted a call to Lima, Peru, where she and her family will serve the church as global missionaries.

Contemporary Issues in Mission and World Christianity Series is published in partnership with Luther Seminary (St. Paul, MN) with funds from the Global Mission Institute and the Justice and Christian Community Program.
