Paul O. Manz

The Enduring Legacy
of the Hymn Festival

James W. Freese

Paul Manz enjoyed a long career, serving as organist, composer, teacher, and recitalist. Known for his improvisations, Manz cultivated and vigorously promoted the idea of the hymn festival—a program of singing, readings, and organ music, often assisted by choirs and instrumentalists. Hymn festivals continue to be popular throughout the United States largely due to his vision and energetic leadership. He was twice named one of the “Ten Most Influential Lutherans” and received many honorary doctorates and awards.

James Freese is Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Master of Church Music and Parish Music Programs at Concordia University Wisconsin, where he has taught since 2000. For 31 years he was Cantor at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—21 of those also as a day school teacher. He was privileged to be one of Paul Manz’s last organ students at the Paul Manz Institute (from 1995-1997) before Dr. and Mrs. Manz returned to live in Minneapolis.

This is the fourth in a series of monographs published by the Center for Church Music, Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Illinois—Shaping American Lutheran Church Music—highlighting persons, movements, and events which have helped shape the course of church music among Lutherans in North America.
