The Augsburg Quartets

A Mission-Driven Tradition

Merton P. Strommen and David M. Larson

This is the story of the quartets and singing groups that were established to encourage a strong relationship between Augsburg College and the congregations which supported the college. The quartets helped spread the temperance message and encouraged the development of youth work. The history, with photos of most of the quartets, covers years from the late 1800s to the 1960s. As the quartets traveled the country their mission was to bear witness to Christ and the Gospel. Included is a CD of the 1953 quartet. This book is a treasure for those who seek inspiration from the activities of youth, those interested in development of small college traditions, and those interested in history.

Merton Strommen traveled seven summers as a part of an Augsburg Quartet. Later he became the founder and director of the Augsburg Centennial singers. A research psychologist, Strommen was founder and director of Search Institute and the Augsburg Youth and Family Institute.

David Larson, a retired business man, sang contrabass with the Augsburg Centennial Singers on their 1944 trip to Norway. His father, Rudolph, sang second bass for three years with the Augsburg Gospel Quartet Team.
