Philip Pfatteicher earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Pennsylvania, an M.Div. from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and an S.T.M. from Union Theological Seminary in New York.

Pfatteicher was a member of the Liturgical Text Committee of the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship, and a member of the task force on Occasional Services. He has served in Lutheran parishes Philadelphia and New York, and is currently serving as associate pastor of First Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh and adjunct professor of Sacred Music at Duquesne University.

He has authored such works as Commentary on the Occasional Services; Commentary on the Lutheran Book of Worship; Festivals and Commemorations: Handbook to the Calendar in the Lutheran Book of Worship; The School of the Church: Worship and Christian Formation; Dictionary of Liturgical Terms; Liturgical Spirituality; and many articles and reviews in the areas of liturgy and of literature. He is married and has four children and five grandchildren.
