The Viability of a Sacrifical Theology of Atonement
|
A Critque and Analysis of Traditional and Transformational Views
Thomas E. Long
|
In the traditional theology of sacrificial atonement, scholars have represented Jesus' death on the cross as the ultimate redemptive sacrifice for the world. Repeated critiques of this traditional understanding have given rise to alternative understandings of Jesus' death on the cross. This book provides an analysis of the traditional theology of atonement and a commentary on the criticisms that have surfaced, together with an evaluation of the Colin E. Gunton contribution to the discourse.
Thomas Long is Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin. His special interests are in the fields of inter-religious dialogue and the doctrine of the atonement. He has earned degrees from Albion College (B.A.,1968), Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (M.Div.,1974), Duke University (Th.M., 1992), and Marquette University (Ph.D.,1999). Tom lives with his wife Carol in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
