The New Perspective
on Paul

David C. Ratke, editor

Paul’s prominent place in the New Testament and hence in the formation of Christian theology means that the foci and impact of the new perspective on Paul extend into almost every dimension of the biblical and theological disciplines. His prominent place in the thought of Martin Luther makes the new perspective especially relevant to Lutheran theology, with its commitment to justification by grace through faith as “the article on which the church stands or falls,” its doctrine that salvation is granted solely in Christ, and its hermeneutical principle of rightly dividing law and gospel. Each of these elements is grounded deeply in a Pauline image or theme; any new perspective on Paul would necessarily have implications for the Lutheran theological enterprise that rests on them. So it was that in August 2009 the convocation of teaching theologians of the ELCA came together at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, to consider the new perspective on Paul and some of its implications.

Contibutors include Peter A. Pettit, Stephen Hultgren, John Meech, Jann Boyd, Norma Cook Everist, Darrell Jodock, and Kris Lindbeck
