The Vocation of
Lutheran Higher Education

What is the vocation of Lutheran higher education--especially now that it is not only or primarily education for and by Lutherans? Over the past several decades, this question has lead to a new concerted effort to retrieve and redefine what it means to be a college of the church.

Through rich discussions at the annual Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference and robust debate within the journal Intersections, many now agree that, at best, ELCA colleges and universities principally educate students so that they can discern the material, social, and spiritual needs of others and then respond with committed service and out of a sense of gratitute. In short, the vocation of Lutheran higher education is to educate for vocation.

By collecting the most influential essays in Intersections and beyond, this book traces the history of Lutheran higher education, depicts its chief marks, offers critical perspectives on its aim to educate for vocation, and traces trajectories into the decades to come. Featured are the following leaders in American religion, Lutheran thought, and higher education:
Robert Benne, Roanoke College
Tom Christenson, Capital University
Paul Dovre, Concordia College
Mary J. Henold, Roanoke College
Darrell Jodock, Gustavus Adolphus College
