And Grace Will Lead Me Home
The Jerry Evenrud Collection of Images of the Parable of the Prodigal Son

Robert M. Brusic

And Grace Will Lead Me Home has won two IPPY awards from the Independent Publishers 2008 Book awards. One IPPY award was received in the Art Book catergory. The second is for Outstanding Book of the Year: Most original concept.

The Jerry Evenrud collection of images of the parable of the Prodigal Son encompasses works from 1540 to 2005. The historical span of the collection affirms the continuing resonance of the parable. The media range from etchings, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, and fabric. The collection reveals the desire of the artists to delve into the meaning of the parable and to convey that meaning to others. Some artists depict the entire narrative in a series of works, usually four to six segments. Others focus on one aspect, such as the pig pen or the return of the prodigal. The segment most frequently portrayed by a single print is the homecoming embrace by the father, the scene that represents the focus of the parable and thus of faith--grace and forgiveness.

This full-color, hardbound book (with dust jacket) is a treasury and a treasure.

"The simple story of sin and forgiveness is the Parable of the Prodigal Son has captivated and inspired the imaginations of millions of readers since Luke first put the parable to page. The story isn't really so simple. One quick perusal through the pages of this book will confirm that the parable is complex in structure and rich in meaning.." Richard Bliese, President, Luther Seminary

"I did not set out to create a collection; it just happened. Nurturing and shepherding the collection has enriched my life. But now Luther Seminary, where art is a part of the educational mission, seems to be the place where the collection has great potential for sharing the gospel; it is visual evangelism, speaking where words cannot. It is my hope that for as long as the story of the Prodigal Son is told, the collection will continue to inspire people and enrich their faith." Jerry Evenrud
